Those who may regularly come into contact with sufferers such as youth workers, counsellors and particularly students of both mental health and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will also find this resource helpful.

Part one: Bulimia and Binge-eating Overview

The first half of the book provides key information about both bulimia and binge-eating and includes the following: case study, how the disorders affect people's lives, physical complications, causes (physical, psychological, social factors) and treatment options (therapy, antidepressant medication). Particularly useful is the information on the dangerous methods of purging such as laxative abuse, vomiting, ipecac and diuretics and how such behaviours severely impact upon one's health. Factors increasing vulnerability to eating disorders as well as triggers and maintenance factors are also explored offering the reader a broad overview of each condition.

The second half of the book offers the reader practical self-help and guidance through undertaking six clearly explained steps which include the following: meal planning, monitoring one's eating, intervention methods used to prevent binge-eating, problem-solving skills, elimination of dieting and changing negative thinking patterns. The latter focuses on identifying and challenging problematic issues commonly associated with eating disorders such as perfectionism and all or nothing thinking. At the back a whole variety of different monitoring worksheets are also provided.

To conclude, 'Overcoming Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-eating' is an extremely helpful, easy to follow and practical self-help guide for individuals either currently in some form of treatment or as a stand-alone resource.
