There are many different approaches available in terms of treating those affected by mental health conditions. In the case of depression, a combination of therapy (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy) and antidepressant medication is often the most common approach to treatment.
In addition to the standard medications used to treat depression there are some sufferers who have been helped by using alternatives such as herbal supplements or vitamins. One such herbal approach is that of St. John's Wort. Commonly questions concerning St. John's Wort include:
- "What is St. John's Wort?"
- "What are the advantages of using St. John's Wort?"
- "What are the disadvantages of using St. John's Wort?"
What is St. John's Wort?
St. John's Wort is an example of a herbal medicine that has often been used to treat depression; it works on the same chemical systems within the brain as more traditional forms of prescribed antidepressants.
This herb is available from most pharmacies and is also often sold in health-food shops although it is important to recognise that just because it is 'herbal' does not mean that it is any safer than using prescribed medication. There is also much debate among complementary therapists/practitioners and medical doctors about whether herbal alternatives are effective or not.
Advantages of Using St. John's Wort for Depression
Some sufferers of mild depression may not wish to discuss their symptoms with their doctor and in minor depression cases St. John's Wort may be a viable option. The herbal remedy is often well tolerated and does not require a prescription and is widely available so does not necessitate any medical appointments although most doctors recommend that it is worth discussing any medications prior to starting a new regime.
There are many professions where an individual's personal medical history is requested and unfortunately there still exists much stigma about common mental health conditions such as depression. Therefore in the case of an individual who has only experienced very mild depression and the individual has not been diagnosed with the condition, taking a herbal remedy may be their preferred option purely in an attempt to avoid problems with employment.
Disadvantages of Using St. John's Wort Antidepressant
As this remedy does not require a medical check-up or prescription a person may not be aware of potential side-effects or interactions with other medication that has been prescribed. The main disadvantage of taking this herbal medicine is that unlike prescription drugs they are not scientifically scrutinized in the same way, side-effects are not as well documented and the effects are not fully understood.
As with all medication whether over the counter or prescribed it is important to discuss possible adverse effects with either a pharmacist or medical doctor. For more information on antidepressants and how depression medication may help, seek advice from your family doctor.
