Exploring the role of herbal medicine in treating those affected by symptoms associated with mental health problems.

In today's hectic pace of life, there are few people who have not experienced feelings of stress at some point. In addition common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression-related conditions are becoming increasingly prevalent, especially in Western society.

While traditional treatments for anxiety and depression typically include a combination of medication, such as antidepressants, and psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT) and family therapy there are also some herbal alternatives.

Which Herbs Treat Stress?

A form of herbal medicines used to treat those suffering from stress are often referred to as 'adaptogens' and this group includes arctic root (Rhodiola rosea), fruit of five flavours (Schizandra chemicals) and Siberian ginger (Eleutheroccus). Adaptogens are so called because they are believed to help those affected by stressful situations to adapt by moving through the typical responses to emotional stress and to reach a point of acceptance so they can move forward.

As with all forms of medication regardless of whether they are herbal or man-made, side-effects can affect some people and therefore it is important to consult one's family doctor prior to beginning any new treatment.

Which Herbs Treat Depression?

There are two main forms of herbs used in the treatment of depression conditions: St. John's Wort (Hypericum) and the dried root of wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa). While the former is used to treat mild to moderate forms of depression the latter is more commonly used to treat sufferers of post-natal depression.

The root of wild yam is identified as containing the hormones progesterone and oestrogen and thus is also recognised as a means of helping both men and women to balance their hormones. St John's Wort has been used for centuries in the treatment of depression and is native to Europe, North Africa and Asia. It is believed to have similar actions to tricyclic antidepressants and research studies have shown it to be as effective as light-therapy for treating seasonal affective disorder.

Which Herbs Treat Anxiety?

In addition to St John's Wort there are several other herbal treatment used to reduce anxiety including the following: Valerian, kava kava and German Chamomile, hops and passion flower. Another form of herbal treatment involves using the herbal extract from oats, known as Avena sativa.

Oats are believed to help children affected by hyperactivity and adults suffering from anxiety to feel calmer and promote more restful sleep.

As with all forms of herbal medicine, particularly in the case of those experiencing symptoms of depression, it is advisable to consult one's family doctor before commencing a new form of treatment.
