As children are far more sensitive to the harmful effects of UV radiation, it is vital for them to wear sunscreen, protective clothing, hat and sunglasses.

There is much research to suggest that avoiding sun exposure as much as possible in childhood will lower the chances of ending up with a form of skin cancer such as malignant melanoma. It is sensible practice to avoid exposure to sun in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest. Many doctors are also less inclined to recommend the use of sunscreens for children under the age of six.

Avoid Sun Exposure Where Possible

Children have far more sensitive skin and are thus more at risk when exposed to the sun's harmful UV radiation. As a result it is best to avoid sun exposure as much as possible in order to reduce the likelihood of serious skin damage. In many European countries where summer brings very hot weather, canopies are used to offer children the chance to play outside but still remain out of the sun. For families with young children, it is well worth considering purchasing a sun-tent for use on the beach. This enables very young infants to join the family at the beach without exposure to potential sun damage.

During warm spells it is crucial to ensure that children become accustomed to drinking more fluids so that they do not end up dehydrated. When leaving the home it is also helpful to always bring a bottle of water or children's flask.

Sun Protection for Children

There are now many different swim or sun-suits available which are able to offer a good level of protection. Particularly when intending to go on a beach holiday, it is worth visiting a few sport shops and children's clothing stores to find suitable protective beach-wear. To avoid the risk of ocular melanoma it is important for all children to wear UVA and UVB protection sunglasses. Sunhats are essential and children should ideally have a spare one at school to ensure they are protected. Cover children's skin as much as possible when they are outside and it is essential to apply sunscreen liberally and reapply regularly.

To get children more interested or co-operative in wearing sunscreen, it is worth buying the spray-on form which they can use. In addition, many sunscreen brands now offer special colourful sunscreen lotion to make it more fun and child-friendly.

As highlighted above, children are far more at risk of skin damage from UV radiation as a result of sun exposure. Therefore, it is best to avoid sun exposure in the very young and ensure children wear sunhats, sunglasses, high protection sunscreen and remain well hydrated.
